Having an impressive resume can be the key to landing a great job – so it’s important to know what to include (and avoid) when writing your resume. Following are a few basic tips to help you succeed and avoid problems.
Never Lie on Your Resume – It can be tempting to “embellish” your resume, but the fact is that lying is never a good idea. It you are found to have lied, that can be cause for immediate termination from your job. It will also do a lot of harm to your reputation and can prevent you from landing future jobs. In addition, lying on your resume about your educational credentials is actually illegal in some cases and can be construed as fraud.
Play Up Your Skills and Strengths – Having skills and past work experience that are pertinent to the job you are applying for can give you a big edge. Be sure to list any and all skills/experience that may be relevant. Try to come up with a list of at least 10 skills (these can include general skills such as self-motivation, good communication, adaptability, leadership, etc.).
Other Good Things to Include – Some of the things that can really improve your resume include volunteer work, studying abroad, serving in student government, working on the school newspaper and membership in clubs or professional organizations that are relevant to the job you are seeking.
Things to Avoid – Typos and bad grammar will really hurt your chances. Other things you should avoid include personal information (such as marital status), hobbies, irrelevant work experience, salary information, references and incorrect contact information.
